Not Mayberry

Can a shy, retiring teacher from the big city find true happiness in the small town of Wilkesboro NC, which even the locals call "Moonshine Capital of the World."

Update on the traffic and accidents in our neighborhood...

... a few days after that accident I mentioned in the last post I ran into the newspaper lady at the Y. I asked her why there hadn't been a story about the accident! She said she was not working at the paper that evening and that the radio scanner must have been turned off. So I told her all about it.

So, in the Monday edition of the local rag, there it was - a little article about what the trouble had been. Seems Jacqueline Anne was going West on 268, ran the red light and crashed into Lucie Huye who was going south on school street with the green light. Lucie Huye was trapped in her car for a bit which explains all of the emergency vehicles. She was taken to the Medical Center. Jaqueline Anne on the other hand seems to have been fine and the police gave her full credit for the entire production.

So now we know.

The lummox and I were going for his afternoon walk ....

... last Wednesday. We drove down to the Community College Park - it only has one way in, and one way out. He did his little walk and we got in the car and started home. When we came to the right turn to our house on 268 there was a long line of traffic waiting to make the turn. They weren't moving. We waited (you know how patient in traffic I can be).

Finally decided the heck with it and pulled around all of the stopped cars and went on up to the light in the left turn lane. Looked down towards the light on our right at the intersection before our house and saw ...

A solid wall of fire trucks, ambulances, and flashing lights.

You have to know Wilkesboro to know what I am talking about, but the town is so cleverly laid out that from where we were we could either wait until the wreck and injured were cleared away, or we could make an enormous 10 mile circle to loop back around to the one other entrance to our neighborhood.

I immediately decided that the little lummox would enjoy a ten mile ride through the countryside.

the odd thing is, the local newspaper, which publishes long accounts complete with pictures of every fender bender in the county, did not cover this one. To this moment I have no idea what it was. Neither does the lummox, or at least he is not talking.

Clever, followed closely by Mischief,

(as often in life)

They do grow up .... sooner or later...

... not that I would know, not having children. Nice collection of nieces and nephews, actual and notional, though.

Anyway, Carmen has a good friend from her days at this school. Not so long ago. Her friend had a son, one who grew up. Don't know if he is gainfully employed, but he does write.

He wrote this, for example. It was hailed as "the funniest play since Neil Simon" by Tom Hulce. Unfortunately, as Tom helpfully pointed out, "nobody does Neil Simon plays anymore."

Still, the trailer to the play is fun.

I didn't know that plays now had trailers.

Whew! Just made it ...

... here's some encouraging news from the Center of Disease Control:

People aged 60 and older may have some immune protection against the new swine flu, a leading influenza scientist said Friday.

Made it by four days! I am so glad to be sixty. AND ... I get the half price fare on my weekly bus ride!

I am my mother's son.

and my grandfather's grandson.

World's largest cave entrance found in Vietnam...

... birthplace of the world's smallest and cutest two year old! Here it is. (the cave, not the boy).
And if that doesn't work try this one. It is called the Son Doong Cave.

BUNNIES! ... In one more possibly futile attempt ...

... to impress Maeraed. But little Mr Miggs will probably like it.

yes. I know. Weird.
