Oh dear. Shouldn't you be working on syllabi or something?
Possible Explanation I: It IS a rodent; the word is probably a combination of "excavating" and "escalating".

Uh. None of the above. This is the correct LATIN spelling of the word.
(either that, or it's the Canadian spelling)

Hmm, insulting your wife and your brother in one go -- sure, that will get you sympathy. Isn't spelling the first thing to go?
I don't take it as an insult. I just can’t spell well at all. However this just shows that when I recognize that something is misspelled it must really be bad. (Oh, by the way, you can find a lot of things on eBay that other people will miss if you misspell the word when you do your search.)
