Not Mayberry

Can a shy, retiring teacher from the big city find true happiness in the small town of Wilkesboro NC, which even the locals call "Moonshine Capital of the World."

RESTAURANT REVIEW: PHIPPS
Finally made it over to the new Phipps. From the outside it looks nice - I've always liked the building which apparently was designed for the original McAllister. Once we got inside, however, the food was a disappointment. Plastic rice covered with mushroom glop, perhaps from a can. On the other hand, my steak was fine for the price and the baked potato was alright. Service was a highlight, with the young waitress doing everything she could think of to keep us happy after we complained about the rice. And the management did not charge us for the meal, so they are determined to do their best. That alone would rate a return trip. Overall my impression was of a local restaurant that is best suited for stuff off the grill and trying very hard to please. I'll go back, probably to try out their breakfast.
